MQ-4 Methane Gas Sensor Information

Sensor Details

What is the MQ-4 Sensor?

The MQ-4 sensor is highly sensitive to Methane (CH4) and Natural Gas. It is widely used in domestic and industrial safety equipment to detect gas leaks.

Gases Detected:

  • Methane (CH4)
  • Natural Gas (CNG)
  • Can also detect Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

How does it work?

It operates on the principle of chemoresistance. The sensing element, made of Tin Dioxide (SnO2), becomes more conductive in the presence of methane. The microcontroller measures this change to trigger an alarm or display the concentration.

Common Applications:

  • Domestic gas leak alarms.
  • Industrial combustible gas detectors.
  • Portable gas detectors for safety inspections.
  • Mining industry safety equipment.
